Bob Ball, a gay real estate developer from Portland, Oregon who is seen as a would-be politician and reportedly has an interest in running in the city's mayoral race, has been accused of launching a nasty smear campaign against the leading candidate for the top job who is another openly gay man — City Commissioner Sam Adams.

It appears that Ball has decided to use the recent gay political scandals (such as Mark Foley and underage pages) as fodder for an unsubstantiated smear job against his potential opponent. Ball has apparently twisted a mentoring relationship that Adams had with a 17-year-old intern in the Oregon house to make it appear something untoward was going on.

The Oregonian reports: "The problem: The story Ball told about Adams and a 17-year-old legislative intern isn't true, according to both Adams and the young man. Adams acknowledges trying to be a mentor, including exchanging numerous phone calls and text messages with the young man over several months in summer 2005. But both men said that they have never been anything more than friends. Ball said he was doing a public service in speaking with [Portland City Commissioner Randy] Leonard, implying that as a reserve police officer he felt a responsibility to report suspected child abuse. Oregon law requires people in positions of responsibility -- public or private -- to report child abuse to police or welfare workers. Those he told, including Leonard and former Mayor Vera Katz, said they took it as an attempt at political assassination."

The charges have led Adams to write an open letter to the citizens of Portland.

Writes Adams: "I have in the past, and I will in the future, respond to people who reach out to me for help and advice. This is especially true when it comes to young people. Growing up in Newport and Eugene, Oregon I remember when I was a teenager and I had nobody who I felt I could talk to at a time I desperately needed someone to give me advice and perspective about coming to terms with being gay. I came through it. Not everyone does. Gay youth suicide rates, homelessness and depression are still too high. And adequate services have been lacking: Reasons why I co-founded Portland's Q Center, served on the Boards of Cascade AIDS Project, Basic Right Oregon and lobbied the state legislature in support of statewide non-discrimination laws. I didn't get into public life to allow my instinct to help others to be snuffed out by fear of sleazy misrepresentations or political manipulation. I understand the need for good judgment, and I keep within the bounds of propriety -- as I did in this case."

Beau Breedlove, the 17-year-old intern who is now 20, continues to say there is and never was any kind of romantic relationship between him and Adams. Ball has issued a statement in response to the local media frenzy regarding the accusations, concluding "Any story here is not about me."

The Portland Mercury blog frames the debate. Adams told the paper: "If this had come from the right wing—and it probably will now—that would have been one thing. But to come from another gay man is something more hurtful. It plays into the worst, deep-seeded fears society has about gay men: You can’t trust them with your young."

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mayor Jim Naugle faced growing pressure this week for his homophobic and other inflammatory remarks, with some gay activists calling Tuesday for his resignation.

About 40 people wearing yellow "Flush Naugle" T-shirts rallied at the city commissioners' meeting, a foretaste of a larger rally planned next week, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported.

Above City Hall, an airplane flew a banner demanding "Surrender Naugle" in the name of Web site www.flushnaugle.org.

Former City Commissioner Dean Trantalis, citing recent beefs between Naugle and the city's black and other communities, said Naugle's performance has slipped in the past year or so and that he should step down.

"Your beliefs are felt by no one in this city, your attitude scares people from even wanting to visit here, and your conduct has become a liability to a city that needs to move forward," Trantalis said.

Others, including the president of Fort Lauderdale's tourism authority, said they had repeatedly had to distance themselves from Naugle statements including that gays are "unhappy" and use city toilets for "illegal sex," the latter claim disputed by police.

Naugle is in trouble for other statements, including that affordable housing wouldn't be needed if "schlocks" among his constituents would deign to work more than 40 hours a week instead of sitting around drinking beer.

The commissioners Tuesday killed a proposal to build a $250,000-plus robotic toilet at a city beach, the Sun-Sentinel reported. Naugle had lobbied hard for the robojohn, telling reporters it was needed to prevent gays having illegal sex.

"Attacking groups of Fort Lauderdale residents to justify city expenditures is never appropriate behavior," Mitchell Ceasar, chairman of the Broward County Democratic Party, wrote in a letter to Naugle, a fellow Democrat.

"As I know, an apology is not in your lexicon. Therefore, I can only hope that you would refrain from such behavior in the future," Ceasar wrote.

"Apologize for what?" the Sun-Sentinel quoted Naugle as saying.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Isaiah Washington, fired this month from "Grey's Anatomy" following the firestorm he started with a homophobic invective, hit back at the network Thursday.

"They fired the wrong guy," the 43-year-old actor said in an interview with the Houston Chronicle.

He blames former cast mate T.R. Knight for stoking the scandal that led him to lose his role in the ABC hit. Knight is the one who should have been let go, he told the newspaper.

"I have to clear my name," said Washington. "I'll start from the beginning. I'm telling everything. So here's the truth."

Washington, who said he is considering a lawsuit, accused Knight of exploiting the controversy in order to get a salary increase and to enhance his role.

Washington drew fire after using the anti-gay epithet backstage at the Golden Globe Awards in January while denying he'd used it previously against Knight, 34, during an on-set dustup with co-star Patrick Dempsey.

Knight, who announced soon after the initial fracas that he was gay, told talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres in January that Washington used the slur against him and that "everyone (on the set) heard" him do so.

"That's a lie," Washington told the Chronicle. "I used the word during a disagreement with Patrick. I apologized for that. We shook hands and went back to work."

Washington was criticized for his comments by gay-rights groups, as well as by fellow cast member Katherine Heigl. Expressing contrition, he said he was seeking therapy and filmed a public-service announcement in which he said "words have power" to hurt or heal.

"I was not fired for making homophobic slurs," Washington said. "I did everything I said I would do. ... I wanted everyone to know I was remorseful."

A spokeswoman for ABC did not immediately return a phone call Thursday by The Associated Press seeking comment.

"I'm not angry," Washington told the Chronicle. "I'm disappointed."

Roberto Duncanson, 20, also of Brooklyn, died soon after the May 12 attack.

Alleged killer Omar Willock, 17, faces 25 years to life if convicted.

Willock and Duncanson passed each other on St. Marks Avenue in Crown Heights, and Willock became enraged, accusing Duncanson of looking at him, prosecutors said in a written statement. Duncanson continued walking to a friend's house as Willock shouted anti-gay remarks. It's unclear how Willock knew Duncanson was gay, prosecutors told the New York Daily News.

On his way home, Duncanson again passed Willock, and Willock again berated him for his sexual orientation. Duncanson tried to walk away, but Willock came after him, first with his fists and then with a knife.

Paramedics found Duncanson on the sidewalk, stabbed four times; he died an hour later at Kings County Hospital. Memorial services were held May 20 at the New Haven Temple of Seventh-Day Adventists in Brooklyn.

Willock, charged with second-degree murder and second-degree murder as a hate crime, was being held without bail Friday.

MIAMI - Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said Wednesday that he hates gay people, but later said he regretted the remarks.

``You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people,'' he said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket. ``I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States.''

The discussion was sparked by last week's announcement that retired NBA center John Amaechi is gay.

The host asked Hardaway how he would interact with a gay teammate.

``First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room.''

If he did find out that a teammate was gay, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be removed from the team.

``Something has to give,'' Hardaway said. ``If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that's upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate.''

Amaechi also detailed his life, in his autobiography ``Man in the Middle,'' which was released Wednesday. He hoped his coming out would be a catalyst for intelligent discourse.

``I'm actually tempted to laugh,'' Amaechi told The Miami Herald. ``Finally, someone who is honest. It is ridiculous, absurd, petty, bigoted and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan and unfathomable. But it is honest. And it illustrates the problem better than any of the fuzzy language other people have used so far.''

Hardaway later apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with Fox affiliate WSVN in Miami.

``Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that,'' he said. ``That was my mistake.''

Hardaway has reportedly been removed from further league-related appearances.

``It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours,'' NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Doug Blasdell, an out gay trainer who appeared on Bravo's reality TV series "Work Out" has died unexpectedly after being rushed to the hospital over the weekend.

Bravo released the following statement Wednesday: "All of us at Bravo are deeply saddened by the terrible news of Doug Blasdell's untimely passing.

"He was an inspiring trainer, an exuberant colleague who made the gym a very fun place each and every day and was extraordinarily warm in all aspects of his life. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his many friends and colleagues at this very difficult time."

Blasdell appeared on the July 18, 2006, cover of The Advocate alongside the show's lesbian star, Jackie Warner. Speaking to www.AfterElton.com around the same time, he talked about how much he enjoyed working on the Bravo show.

"It's a beautiful thing because it really focuses on being gay and the gay community in general," he said. "The people they picked represent our community very well. I mean, there's drama, of course. There is in any community. But the three of us give different examples of what it is to be gay. And none of it is negative."

The Los Angeles native earned a business degree in 1988 at the University of Southern California, according to Bravo. He put himself through college and was the first in his family to graduate, the network said.

No official report has been released on the cause of death. In July, AfterElton reported that Blasdell was 44 years old and single.

The heated controversy at ABC's top show, "Grey's Anatomy," boiled over Thursday as the network rebuked co-star Isaiah Washington for an anti-gay comment and Washington issued a lengthy apology.

"We are greatly dismayed that Mr. Washington chose to use such inappropriate language at the Golden Globes, language that he himself deemed `unfortunate' in his previous public apology," the network said in a statement.

"His actions are unacceptable and are being addressed," the statement conclude.

During a backstage interview Monday at the Globes gala, Washington denied involvement in a heated on-set incident in October during which an anti-gay remark was reportedly uttered.

"No, I did not call (co-star) T.R. (Knight) a faggot," Washington told reporters. "Never happened, never happened."

In his apology Thursday, Washington acknowledged "repeating the word Monday night."

"I apologize to T.R., my colleagues, the fans of the show and especially the lesbian and gay community for using a word that is unacceptable in any context or circumstance. I marred what should have been a perfect night for everyone who works on `Grey's Anatomy.' I can neither defend nor explain my behavior. I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I've asked for help."

ABC said in its statement it has "a longstanding policy to maintain respectful workplaces" for its employees, adding that the network had "dealt with the original situation in October, and thought the issue resolved."

Thursday's events followed a critical statement Wednesday from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Neil Giuliano, GLAAD president, said he had contacted Washington's representatives in hopes of meeting the actor to discuss "the destructive impact of these kinds of anti-gay slurs."

"Washington's repeated use of it on-set and in the media is simply inexcusable," Giuliano said in the statement.

Washington said on Thursday that he welcomes the chance to meet with gay and lesbian community leaders "to apologize in person and to talk about what I can do to heal the wounds I've opened."

"I know a mere apology will not end this, and I intend to let my future actions prove my sincerity," Washington said.

Knight, who said soon after the October fracas that he is gay, appeared in Tuesday's taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to discuss the original incident and Washington's recent comments.

"He referred to me as a faggot," Knight said of the October incident. "Everyone heard it."

"Grey's Anatomy," now in its third season, won the Golden Globe for best television drama. It regularly finishes atop or near the top of the Nielsen rankings.

A Louisiana man who allegedly confessed to murdering 23 men pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to nine counts of first-degree murder, charges which carry a possible death sentence.

Ronald Dominique was rolled into the courtroom in a wheelchair. He mumbled "not guilty" to each count as his sister and other relatives looked on along with family members of some of his alleged victims.

The nine charges stem from the rape and murders of nine men between 2002 and 2005 in Terrebonne Parish. The other 12 men were allegedly killed in other parts of the state and charges are being handled by authorities in the various other parishes.

Dominique, 42, has allegedly confessed to 23 murders of men from 1997 to 2005. Victims were found in ditches, sugar cane fields, and other remote locations in southeastern Louisiana. He was arrested at a homeless shelter in December. Initially booked with two murders, he eventually was indicted on nine and, during interrogation, confessed to 23, authorities have said.

Dominique, who has a heart condition, allegedly enticed victims with offers of money for gay sex, or in some cases by offering his "wife" for heterosexual encounters, authorities said. He showed the men a picture of a woman, but he is not married.

In addition to the nine charges in Terrebonne, Dominique was also arrested in connection with two bodies found in the New Orleans suburb of Jefferson Parish. But local authorities have said they lack the necessary evidence to hold him in connection with those cases and it remains unclear if or when he will be charged in connection with the death of the two men.

Terrebonne District Attorney Joe Waitz said he is trying to schedule meetings with prosecutors in other districts to discuss how to proceed with other possible cases. Dominique's public defender, Anthony Champagne, declined comment.

A gay police officer who claimed that Haledon, N.J., police discriminated against him has settled his suit for $450,000, the Associated Press reported.

Sgt. James Len, a 20-year veteran of the force, claimed in May 2004 that he had been passed over for promotion and suffered harassment because he is gay.

In 2002, Len told his wife and children he was gay and moved out of their home. Soon after, he said, he began to face sexual harassment at work. He said he was reprimanded for minor tardiness, though his colleagues were not. Former Councilman Ayman Mamkej once radioed "Homo, homo, homo," he claimed, and former Mayor Ken Pengitore called him a "three-dollar bill."

The two men once followed him in their cars when he was off duty, he said, and he was told that a promotion to lieutenant was dismissed because he failed to turn in the paperwork on time.

The council has 45 days to approve the settlement and 45 more days to pay it, Charles Sciarra, Len's Clifton, N.J.-based attorney, told the AP.

The settlement won't be finalized until the Haledon borough council approves; the issue is scheduled for Jan. 18. If it does, taxpayers can be expected to foot $30,000 of the award, Mayor Domenick Stampone told AP; a borough insurer will pay the rest.

As part of the settlement, Len's file will be cleared of past and pending charges made by the police department. Any future promotions must be done in "good faith," Sciarra said in Superior Court.

Len has been advised by his lawyer not to talk to the press, and to "look forward, not look back." Mamkej could not be reached Thursday and Pengitore declined comment.

Stampone, who defeated Pengitore, a Republican, in the November mayoral race, said the lawsuit is an unfortunate isolated occurrence, "not what the borough of Haledon is about."

Phanta "Jack" Phoummarath, a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, died after ingesting large amounts of alcohol at a pledge party at Lambda Phi Epsilon house in December 2005, authorities said. Phoumarrath's body was found the day after.

A grand jury indicted three members of the fraternity last month on hazing charges following a yearlong investigation into Phoummarath's death.

The Travis County medical examiner's office reported that partygoers used green and black markers to write "FAG," "I'm gay" and "I AM FAT" on Phoummarath's head, face, torso, legs and feet. Someone also added drawings depicting naked men and women and blackened his toenails.

"It was disgusting and despicable behavior," Houston attorney Randy Sorrels, who is representing Phoummarath's family, said Tuesday. "This would be the juvenile behavior you might see in junior high or high school, but not college."

Sorrels said Phoummarath was not gay. He said the drawings and epithets were a juvenile prank, and that it had not yet been determined how long before Phoumarrath's death the actions took place.

His family alleges in a lawsuit against the fraternity that pledges were pressured to drink at the party and that someone wrote vulgar graffiti on Phoummarath's body after he passed out. The medical examiner ruled that Phoummarath died of acute alcohol poisoning.

Five Equinox clubs have been brought into question in Manhattan Supreme Court by the janitors, including the flagship gym in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, the Daily News reported.

The workers, who have quit their jobs, said they complained to the management about witnessing and cleaning up after sexual behavior in showers, saunas and steam rooms. Workers also said they were often treated in a hostile manner by gym members, the paper reported. They seek unspecified damages, claiming their civil rights were violated.

Equinox chief operating officer Scott Rosen called the charges "frivolous," adding that sexual exhibitionism is "not an issue."

The New York City Health Department told WCBS-TV in September that it did inspect the Columbus Circle Equinox in response to janitors' complaints but saw nothing.

Africans reacted with a mix of horror and delight at news South Africa had passed a bill to legalize gay marriage, making it the first to do so on a continent where homosexuality is still largely taboo.

Gay rights groups applauded the decision as a step forward for Africa. But some in deeply religious Africa lambasted the decision as "un-African" and immoral.

"This is a foreign action imposed on Africa," Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed told Reuters in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, where powerful Islamists control the south of the country.

"This is not something that is indigenous to Africa, it is something that has come from abroad."

The South African parliament overwhelmingly approved the Civil Union bill on Tuesday, which gives same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual ones.

It still needs approval by the second house of parliament but is expected to come into effect by the end of November.

Taxi driver Nicklaus Mwanaseri in the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salam said the decision to allow gays to wed was so immoral that it signified the world was coming to an end.

"I see a big flood coming soon because of going against God's teaching," he said.

But gay rights groups dismissed charges that gay marriage was un-African and hoped the decision would pave the way for fairer treatment for homosexuals on the poorest continent.

"I feel very, very proud for South Africans. It is a great model for us, for Africa," said Laurent Laroche, spokesman for Mauritian gay rights group, Collectif Arc-en-Ciel, months after hundreds of gays and lesbians shocked shoppers with the Indian Ocean Island's first gay rights march.

In Uganda, lesbian Faridah Kenyini said South Africa had set a good example for the rest of the continent.

"In Uganda, I have to hide myself. I can't bring my girlfriend here or risk being persecuted," she said.

Kenyini tried to flee to Britain but her asylum application was rejected and she was deported to face the wrath of her Muslim father, who had threatened to kill her.

Vista Kalipa, a black homosexual in Cape Town, denied homosexuality was un-African, but said he was braced for opposition from other parts of the continent.

"Homosexuality is as African as can be. How can people claim it is un-African when there are African people who are born gay, raised by African parents on African soil?"

But for one homosexual man in Kenya, the vote would change little for gays, lesbians and bisexuals who live in fear due to prejudice.

"What this will do is open up a flood of gay bashing. No one will say, let's think about this, lets talk about it. No one will say, these people exist, let's give them a voice."

A few short weeks ago, Garden Guy was just a mom-and-pop landscaping business that promoted itself as "making Houston beautiful since 1991" and promised to treat its customers with respect and honesty.

Since then, though, the business has been vilified around the world as a bunch of bigots because its Christian conservative owners refused to do work for a gay couple.

Michael Lord and Gary Lackey, a gay couple requesting bids for a landscaping job at their new house, received a polite -- and, well, honest -- e-mail from Sabrina Farber, a co-owner of Garden Guy: "I need to tell you that we cannot meet with you because we choose not to work for homosexuals."

Stunned, Lackey forwarded the e-mail to 200 friends, asking them not to patronize Garden Guy and urging them to pass the word on to friends and family. "I'm still shocked by the ignorance that exists in today's society," Lackey said in his e-mail.

And word was indeed passed on -- as fast as the Web could carry it.

Within days, the e-mail had been forwarded to thousands of people around the world and quickly became the subject of heated and often ugly debates on the Internet. Because of the furor, a professional association of landscapers created a nondiscrimination policy.

A forum on the Garden Guy Web site, normally reserved for discussions about landscaping and shrubbery, was bombarded with angry comments and venomous attacks from as far away as Australia.

Some people attacked the Farbers' beliefs, threatened the couple and their five children, and said they ought to be sodomized. Others condemned gays as sinners headed toward damnation.

Farber, whose company's Web site has long included Biblical quotes and a link to a Web site that opposes same-sex marriage, said she was shocked by the reaction.

"It was just our intent to uphold our rights as small business owners to choose our clientele," she said. "All the hate, the threats of sodomizing my children, the threats of me being murdered, came out because of a very businesslike straightforward e-mail I sent. The crowd of tolerance and diversity is not so tolerant."

But Farber said she and her husband have also gotten hundreds of calls and messages offering encouragement and have been touched by that. "We just cried. We have been through so much," Farber said. "We become accidental crusaders for Christ."

Lackey and Lord did not return calls from the Associated Press.

"Imagine if it had been a black or Hispanic couple that they wouldn't provide services to. It's really bad," said Jack Valinski, a Houston gay activist. "A lot of gay couples have kids, live in the suburbs and have neighbors that are straight. Yet, we still have instances like this. There is still always that underlying discrimination we all have to deal with."

Houston, unlike Austin and Dallas, has no ordinance prohibiting businesses from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.

Farber's e-mail reached the Harrisburg, Pa., offices of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, which said that the Farbers were misrepresenting themselves as current members of the group and no longer belong.

After receiving hundreds of outraged calls and e-mails, the 1,200-member association issued a statement criticizing the Farbers and created a nondiscrimination policy.

"It has come to our attention that a former member has declined a professional engagement on the grounds of the prospective clients' sexual orientation. This conduct does not conform to the policy and practice of APLD," the organization said.

<< Doogie Howser wasn't outed; he was "lanced." That's a new term to describe celebrities who have been forced to reveal they're gay, said Reichen Lehmkuhl, boyfriend of 'N Sync star Lance Bass.

"It's to be outed by someone in the public media and to a celebrity, and Neil Patrick Harris, I understand, has been 'lanced,'" Lehmkuhl told AP Radio News in a recent interview. The term was coined, he said, after Bass revealed earlier this year that he is gay.

"They're calling it a 'lancing.' It's to be 'lanced,' " Lehmkuhl said of Harris, who said last week he is "a very content gay man living my life to the fullest."

Harris, who played the namesake doctor on the TV series "Doogie Howser, M.D." as a teen, made the disclosure weeks after Perez Hilton, the self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media," posted an item on his Web site, PerezHilton.com, pleading with the 33-year-old actor to come out. Bass, one of Hilton's favorite subjects, disclosed his sexuality in July.

Bass, 27, said he had decided to "speak my mind" because rumors about his sexuality were starting to affect his daily life. The singer also said he was in a "very stable" relationship with Lehmkuhl, 32, a former Air Force captain and winner of season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."

"People should be able to come out on their own," Lehmkuhl told AP Radio. "I don't know so much that it helps gay equality if a celebrity is outed by someone else and it shows that they're forced out."

"It seems like it just continues the vilification of homosexuality in the media in this country," he said.

Lehmkuhl is promoting his book, "Here's What We'll Say," which recounts his time keeping his sexual orientation a secret from Air Force colleagues. >>

are in special wrapers to expedite the whole awkard "putting that damn thing on" process. For those that for whatever reason cant view the video, the wrapper snaps in the middle. you then slightly pull it apart exposing the condom and you can just slip it on. Currently I believe they are only available in Africa.

I know lots of guys, myself included that have had incidents where the hardon just vanishes while putting on a rubber. Sometimes once its on the erection subsides but usually it seems to happen during that whole tearing open the foil, pull it out the package, unroll it etc. Some guys of course just don't like the feel of a rubber but from personal experiences Ive met many men that state they just plain hate putting em on or have trouble doing so or whatever...

If and when they hit the States do you think tPronto's will make a difference in condom usage? Could it possible speed things up enough to end that "awkard" yet necescary process of protection? Could they go on fast enough to end the whole loss of hardon problem?

any thoughts?

Gunfire broke out between two groups at a massive Halloween street party in San Francisco's Castro district, wounding at least 10 people, including innocent bystanders, police said Wednesday.

The shooting began around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday as authorities were dispersing thousands of revelers under a curfew aimed at controlling the traditionally raucous party.

Two people were detained for questioning, but no one had been arrested early Wednesday, police Capt. Al Casciato said. He said two groups of people had gotten into an altercation when the shooting began.

Two people were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, including one with a gunshot wound to the head, Gittens said.

Five others were found at the scene with non-life-threatening injuries, and two more possible victims were identified later, Gittens said.

"We've had a couple of people going into hospitals on their own, and we need to verify whether they were victims of that shooting," he said early Wednesday.

At least some of the victims were innocent bystanders, according to witnesses.

The once-spontaneous and unsanctioned party was taken over by the city four years ago after police recorded five stabbings and a number of assaults in a crowd of 500,000.

Officials and members of the district's gay community said the party began attracting gay-bashers along with colorful costumed characters, and many gay men and lesbians stopped coming.

On Tuesday night, city officials had ramped up police presence by 25 percent, reduced the number of entertainment stages from three to one and cut off the festivities at 11 pm amid concerns of more violence.

"We had the sheriff's department screening people for weapons and alcohol. Obviously you have a major event -- a lot of different spots" to patrol, Gittens said. "I can't explain how this happened. Unfortunately it did happen, and we are investigating to find out who is the cause of the shooting."

Ted Morales, 43, said he was working as a volunteer security guard for the event when he "heard someone empty their gun" in the crowd.

"When the shooting happened, people just dove to the ground like a wall of water," said Morales, who did not see what led up to the shooting. A woman standing near him was grazed in the neck by a bullet, he said.

Sophia Vlahiotis, who owns Capri Ristorante Pizza just yards from the scene, was outside selling pizzas when a crowd of people fleeing the bullets began running in her direction.

"They pushed the table over, the oven fell and then I realised it was gunshots," she said. "They were trying to get into the restaurant, there were so many people."

Vlahiotis, who did not see what led up to the shooting, said this year may be her last participating in the Halloween party.

"I'm still shaking," she said. "I don't know if I want to do this again. It's not worth my life."

Former Rep. Gerry Studds, who became the first openly gay member of Congress when his homosexuality was exposed during a teenage page sex scandal, died early Saturday. He was 69.

Studds died at Boston Medical Center several days after he collapsed while walking his dog, his husband said. Doctors determined his loss of consciousness was due to a blood clot in his lung, Dean Hara said.

Studds regained consciousness and seemed to be improving, but his condition deteriorated Friday because of a second blood clot. The origin of the second clot was not immediately determined, said Hara, who married Studds shortly after same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004.

Hara said Studds gave courage to gay people by winning re-election after publicly acknowledging his homosexuality.

"He gave people of his generation, of my generation, of future generations, the courage to do whatever they wanted to do," said Hara, 49.

Studds was first elected in 1972 and represented Cape Cod and the Islands, New Bedford, and the South Shore for 12 Congressional terms. He retired from Congress in 1997.

In his early career, Studds was known for opposing the Vietnam War and military intervention in Central America. Studds later became an advocate for a stronger federal response to the AIDS crisis and was among the first members of Congress to endorse lifting the ban on gays serving in the military.

In 1983, Studds acknowledged his homosexuality after a 27-year-old man disclosed that he and Studds had had a sexual relationship a decade earlier when the man was a teenage congressional page.

The House of Representatives censured Studds, who then went home to face his constituents in a series of public meetings.

At the time, Studds called the relationship with the teenage page, which included a trip to Europe, "a very serious error in judgment." But he did not apologize and defended the relationship as a consensual relationship with a young adult. The former page later appeared publicly with Studds in support of him.

The scandal recently resurfaced when Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., resigned after exchanging sexually explicit instant messages with a page. Republicans accused Democrats of hypocrisy for savaging Foley while saying little about Studds at that time.

Hara said Studds was never ashamed of the relationship with the page.

"This young man knew what he was doing," Hara said. "He was at (Studds') side."

Studds told his colleagues in a speech on the floor of the House that everyone faces a daily challenge of balancing public and private lives.

"These challenges are made substantially more complex when one is, as am I, both an elected public official and gay," Studds said at the time.

In Congress, Studds was an outspoken advocate for the fishing industry and was hailed by his constituents for his work establishing a limit for foreign fishing vessels 200 miles from the coast. After leaving Congress, he became a lobbyist for the fishing industry and environmental causes.

"His work on behalf of our fishing industry and the protection of our waters has guided the fishing industry into the future and ensured that generations to come will have the opportunity to love and learn from the sea," Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., said in a statement. "He was a steward of the oceans."

In 1996, Congress named the 842-square-mile Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary after him in recognition of his work protecting the marine environment.

In addition to Hara, Studds is survived by a brother, a sister and four nephews.

You have heard "Their Truth"…Now Learn the REAL TRUTH!
(Excerpted from Channelings from Commander Hatonn of the Galactic Federation at the height of the AIDS scare.)

“Man was created to find his ultimate joy in the emotional soul fulfillment—not in a water bed with intrusions or protrusions—those things were designed for the procreation of a species.”—Hatonn, 3/28/1990

“You will find that in monogamously paired homosexual males, three-quarters of the passive partners manifest sperm-induced immune dysregulation (as a result of anti-sperm antigen contamination of the system). The immune dysfunction induced by sperm debilitates the system quite apart from infection by an AIDS virus. Although AIDS development per se may involve the transmission of the HTLV-III/LAV lentivirus (HIV virus)--except in cases of bestiality--the development of sperm-induced immune dysfunction predisposes the anal-sperm-recipient homosexual males to the more severe phenomena of opportunistic infections and Kaposi’s sarcoma. Immune responses to semen provide a background of immune suppression, not only promoting repeated CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection, but also exacerbating the resulting immunologic disorders. In other words, "HEALTHY SEMEN" CAN ALSO MAKE YOU SICK.

“Although AIDS is not what we can consider a “sexually transmitted disease” in the usual vernacular, it is most certainly transmitted by sexual misuse and/or abuse in a compromised recipient. HTLV-III is most certainly a sexually transmitted disease through the rectal mucosa, and is usually vulnerable to the passage of the AIDS agent as well in a compromised vaginal passage. From a purely biological perspective, sodomy—even apart from the transmission of AIDS—is an intrinsically unsanitary and pathological act. In addition, the practice of sodomy has been a primary reason why AIDS has been so readily transmitted and fostered among homosexuals.

ORAL COPULATION AND AIDS

“Additionally—in terms of oral-penile copulation—infected semen received into the mouth provides a source of infection through abrasions or lesions on the gums, tongue, and/or roof of the mouth.

“Venereal diseases affecting the mouth and throat are especially problematic among homosexuals. Often going unrecognized for a period of time, the resulting lesions provide ports of entry and exit for the AIDS virus; AIDS-infected saliva also is a potential danger involved in oral copulation.

“Research has yet to determine conclusively whether or not the gastric juices in the stomach prevent absorption of the AIDS virus into the bloodstream after being ingested. Since the eating of AIDS-infected meat is a possible factor in the spread of AIDS among humans (oops! No one told you about that one? I thought not!), consumption of infected semen may also play a role in transmission. ”—Hatonn 3/28/1990

SADOMASOCHISTIC ACTIVITIES AND THE SPREAD OF AIDS:

“The damaging practice of sodomy itself can be classified as a sadomasochistic act. The bloodletting and exchange of contaminated secretions involved in other traumatic homosexual acts further facilitate the spread of AIDS and other diseases. If you don’t confront the facts you will not eradicate the problem.

MANUAL/ANAL INTERCOURSE--FISTING

“Fisting causes bleeding lacerations of the intestines and tearing of the sphincter muscle as you might suspect. These internal wounds provide enormous opportunity for the entrance and spread of AIDS virus and other infections.

“Mechanical devices, dildos, vibrators, etc, inserted into the rectum and lower colon during fisting can puncture the intestinal wall, causing dangerous seepage of fecal matter into the abdomen. If surgery is not performed promptly enough, this can result in death, and you no longer have to concern yourself with AIDS.

“There is Hope and Healing, but it requires instantly stopping the behavior which has contracted the problem in the first place. It is not the homosexual lifestyle that is the culprit—it is the homosexual behavior. No two males (or females) have ever spread AIDS by sharing an apartment or a cook-stove.”

If you or someone you know has or may suspect having been exposed to the HIV virus, get informed…Get Tested. Then do your homework. It could save your life or theirs. I am here to tell you that Total Healing has happened in cases of absolute turn-around of practices and coming into oneness with the Great Healer on a most intellectual (human) and moral (soul) level. But it is up to man to decide between his own limits or Infinite Acceptance. Grace will always intervene on Man's behalf. It is the Glorious Solution to the Greatest Mystery of Life--that of uniting Spirit with Matter. Accept Grace, and you bring Heaven to Earth.

The Promise

Step into a new world. A world without chronic diseases. Step out of your old world. It has kept you a prisoner. Try something new. The prison has no walls. It has only lines. Lines that mark the ground around you. Inside the lines are your old ideas. Outside are new ideas that invite you to step over and escape your prison. Dare to try these new ideas and your illness promises to recede. In a few weeks it can be gone. (From the book "The Cure for all Diseases" ©1995 Dr. Hulda Clark)

The Basis of the Discoveries

I have indicated throughout this book the existence of pollutants in food and other products. These pollutants were identified using a testing device of my invention known as the Syncrometer™. Complete instructions for building and using this device are contained in this book. Therefore, anyone can repeat the tests described and verify the data.

The Syncrometer™ is more accurate and versatile than the best existing testing methods. A method for determining the degree of precision is also presented. However, at this point it only yields positive or negative results, it does not quantify. The chance of a false positive or a false negative is about 5%, which can be lessened by test repetition.

It is in the public interest to know when a single bottle of a single product tests positive to a serious pollutant. If one does, the safest course is to avoid all bottles of that product entirely, which is what I repeatedly advise. These recommendations should be interpreted as intent to warn and protect the public, not to provide a statistically significant analysis. It is my fervent hope that manufacturers use the new electronic techniques in this book to make purer products than they ever have before. (From the book "The Cure for all Diseases" ©1995 Dr. Hulda Clark)

53 CURED* Cases the First Year

Cure, not treatment, is the subject of this book. In 1991 I discovered the source of HIV. Once the source became clear the cure became obvious. But would it work? After curing 53 cases in a row, all who used this method, I could wait no longer to present these findings. Since that time many more have been cured, too many to be added to this book [*]. Most important is adding you to that list! (From the book "The Cure for HIV and AIDS" ©1993 Dr. Hulda Clark)
* In the most recent edition of the book, five cases verified by PCR lab testing for HIV have been added.

HIV is a virus.
AIDS is a condition.
Sometimes they occur together.
Sometimes they occur separately.

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

The human intestinal fluke (Fasciolopsis buskii) is the source of the HIV virus. This parasite typically lives in the intestine where it might do little harm, causing only colitis, Crohn's disease, or irritable bowel syndrome, or perhaps nothing at all. But if it invades a different organ, like the uterus or the kidneys or liver, it does a great deal of harm. If it establishes itself in the thymus, it causes HIV/AIDS!

It only establishes itself in the thymus in some people. These people have benzene in their bodies. All HIV patients (100%) have both benzene and a stage of the intestinal fluke in their thymuses. The solvent benzene is responsible for letting the fluke establish itself in the thymus. In order to get HIV, you must have both the parasite and benzene in your body. The HIV virus belongs to this fluke. It is not difficult to kill this parasite and all its stages.

AIDS is a condition. When the thymus gland cannot "make" enough T-cells, your immunity is lowered. Benzene is the cause of AIDS. Different toxins accumulate in different organs. If you eat or rub in the tiniest bit of benzene it goes directly to the thymus. It damages the thymus so much that everything else is allowed to land there, too: The mercury from metal tooth fillings, the copper from your copper water pipes etc. Is it any wonder that the thymus can't turn out T-cells when it is full of bits of your toothpaste, your hand lotion, your hair spray, toxic food and beverages? (From the book "The Cure for HIV/AIDS" ©1993 Dr. Hulda Clark)

Abstract/Summary

The human species is now heavily infested with parasites, particularly the intestinal fluke, Fasciolopsis buskii, the sheep liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, the pancreatic fluke of cattle, Eurytrema pancreatica, the human liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis, and the common roundworm, Ascaris. The increase in fluke parasitism is due to the establishment of a new "biological reservoir" in cattle, fowl and household pets. The increase in Ascaris parasitism is probably due to harboring of household pets.

At the same time, micro-contamination of the human food supply with derivatives of the petroleum industry has occurred; these include solvents, antiseptics and numerous products used directly in the food industry. In the presence of benzene, Fasciolopsis buskii, can complete its entire life cycle in the human body, not requiring a snail as an intermediate host, as it usually does. Other solvents contributing to parasitism include isopropyl alcohol, methanol, xylene, and toluene, which now occur as residues in our foods and pollute our body products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, lotions and cosmetics. These solvents are also contaminants of animal feed, and thus are responsible for establishing the new biological reservoir or source of infection of flukes.

Different solvents accumulate preferentially in different organs, a phenomenon known as organotropism. Benzene accumulates in the thymus, resulting in damage to the thymus and completion of the life cycle of Fasciolopsis in the thymus. A stage in the life cycle of Fasciolopsis brings with it the HIV virus. This stage is normally found in snails, and indeed, I have found many snails infected with HIV. In the human, its preferred tissues of colonization are the thymus and penis in the male and the thymus and vagina in the female. The HIV virus has not yet become a human virus, since it disappears within 24 hours after the last fluke stage has been destroyed. However, it could become a true human virus through mutation, no doubt. For this reason it is of paramount importance to end this new kind of parasitism in humans quickly.

Removal of all solvents from the patient's lifestyle and destruction of all fluke stages as well as elimination of undercooked beef, turkey, chicken and dairy products in the diet results in quick recovery, generally less than one week, from HIV infection. HIV/AIDS could be eradicated in a very short time by clearing our food animals and household pets of fluke parasites and by monitoring all food and feed for solvents.

The cause of benzene accumulation in some persons and not in others appears to be due to a lack of a vitamin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), eating more of a common food toxin, 4,5 benzopyrene, and more of a mycotoxin, zearalenone. 4,5 benzopyrene is present in grilled, broiled (flame heated) foods, even ordinary toast, while zearalenone is plentiful in chips, popcorn and brown rice. The role of vitamin B2 is to speed up benzene detoxification to phenol.

Since developmental stages of the intestinal fluke are found in blood, breast milk, saliva, semen, and urine and can be seen directly in these body fluids using a low power microscope, it follows that this parasite can be transmitted not only through sexual contact and blood, but by kissing on the mouth and breast feeding, and childbearing. However, the recipient would develop HIV/AIDS only if benzene were accumulated in his or her body.

The methods used to obtain all these results are discussed in “How To Test Yourself”. A simple circuit is also described which can be built by a novice and allows anyone to reproduce my results.

It was like one day on Oprah, the new version of the Pink Card was announced and the next day all Faggots, regardless of color, were cranking their necks, saying "owh nowh yiew dint!", and "Girlfriend!!" and flipping their hands up like Endora.

And the new heroes were RuPaul, and Paris is Burning, and the maid from the Jeffersons. Which is fine. These are all nobel role models for Butt Pirates, but didn't it feel a bit forced everytime a sissy in a bar spouted out some well-worn zinger from the TV encylopedia of Ebonics?

And then the whole Black Attack faded, and thankfully we have a little more appreciation of "just stuff" and "just people" and less focus on race, and hopefully a little less cocktail-party drive-by sound-bites like "You go, Girl!' and "She is so tough."
Referred to as "The Grandfather of Vogue," Willi has been public about his HIV positive status and helped to influence legions of others. "I've known Willi since I was barely legal and surviving at the West Side Highway piers as a hustler," Xavier wrote on his blog.
"Besides being amazing to watch on the dance floor, Willi Ninja remains one of the most beautiful and gifted souls of our community. He has reached so many people with his love and laughter. Willi was one of the very first people to support my dreams and ambitions as a writer and with the founding of the House of Xavier. I was talking PERIOD. it seems to me that the gay community wants things both ways. "Let's use a quote from Dr. King or X so we can get some black folks on our side..........we should use one from Chavez too." This was said by a white person in a meeting dealing with gays not being able to get married. When I asked if anyone besides myself, Hector and Jordan found anything wrong with this statement. I was told that I was reading into things and this wasnt about race, it was about the right to marry.

When the tree of us got up to leave, we were told that this was sad that we would allow race to play a role in how we support our community. I simply laughed at them and told them that I would not be apart of ANYONE, ANYTHING or any group that would make a statement like the one just made and not see anything wrong with it. We all were told this "well guys, you are gay and what I just said shouldnt decide if you are truly in support of gays being able to married." Jordan told hie that it didnt change us from supporting our rights, but it changed how we view "your" organization and "your views" on our cultures.

My question had nothing to do with sex. I am just wondering how we as a gay community can think we are so diverse and inclusive when we make comments like these.

Lance Bass, band member of 'N Sync, says he's gay and in a "very stable" relationship with a reality show star. Bass, who formed 'N Sync with Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, tells People magazine that he didn't earlier disclose his sexuality because he didn't want to affect the group's popularity.

"I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," he tells the magazine.

'N Sync is known for a string of hits including "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me." The band went on hiatus in 2002. Bass has also found headlines for undertaking astronaut training and failing to raise money for a trip into space.

Bass says he wondered if his coming out could prompt "the end of 'N Sync." He explains, "So I had that weight on me of like, `Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it's bad.' So I just never did."

The singer says he's in a "very stable" relationship with 32-year-old actor Reichen Lehmkuhl, winner of season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."

Bass and Fatone, 29, are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by the screwball comedy "The Odd Couple," in which his character will be gay.

"The thing is, I'm not ashamed — that's the one thing I went to say," Bass says. "I don't think it's wrong, I'm not devastated going through this. I'm more liberated and happy than I've been my whole life. I'm just happy."

Get to slappin'

Today is the official Slap Your Irritating Co-workers Holiday :
Do you have a co-worker who talks nonstop about nothing,
working your last nerve with tedious and boring details that
you don't care about? Do you have a co-worker who ALWAYS
screws up stuff creating MORE work for you? Do you have a
co-worker who kisses so much booty, you can look in
their mouth and see what your boss had for lunch? Do you
have a co-worker who is SOOO obnoxious, when he/she enters
a room, everyone else clears it? Well, on behalf of Ike Turner,
I am so very very glad to officially announce today is
SLAP YOUR IRRITATING CO-WORKER DAY!
There are the rules you must follow:

* You can only slap one person per hour - no more.
* You can slap the same person again if they irritate you again in
the same day.
* You are allowed to hold someone down as other co-workers take
their turns slapping the irritant.
* No weapons are allowed...other than going upside somebody's head
with a stapler or a hole-puncher.
* If questioned by a supervisor [or police, if the supervisor is
the irritant], you are allowed to LIE, LIE, LIE! Now, study the rules,
break out your list of folks that you want to slap the living day lights
out of and get to slapping.....and have a great day!

Mr. Sulu beamed down to lend support to student gay activists who tried to visit a private Christian university.

George Takei, who played the helmsman in three "Star Trek" TV seasons and six movies, made a surprise appearance Monday after a busload of Soulforce Equality Riders tried to talk about faith and gay rights with students at North Central University in downtown Minneapolis.

The 33 activists are traveling by bus to 19 U.S. colleges with religion-based policies opposed to homosexuality. They were locked out of school buildings when they arrived at North Central, which is owned and operated by the Assemblies of God.

After sitting in front of the doors for most of the afternoon, the Soulforce riders and supporters rallied at a park across the street when Takei, who came out as a homosexual last year, stopped by.

The 68-year-old actor said the activists' "equality trek" shares themes with those of the starship Enterprise.

"They have shown courage and character in showing that most people of faith are not extreme reactionaries who oppose equal rights," he said.

Tour organizer Jacob Reitan, 24, said the colleges they are visiting "equate homosexuality with sickness and sin. It's time to have a conversation instead of defaming our humanity."

Nate Ruch, executive director of university relations at North Central, said last week that the riders declined an offer to have a third party mediate a discussion.

Takei was in town to speak at a gay pride event at the University of Minnesota.

NEW YORK -- Is ousted "American Idol" contestant Mandisa anti-gay? The 29-year-old soul singer and outspoken Christian, who was voted off the hit Fox show Wednesday, says she would not perform at an event held in support of the gay community.

Mandisa, a native of Antioch, Tenn., tells Advocate magazine, "Based on what I believe, I'm not an advocate for (being gay), so it's nothing I would take part in."

Still, she says in an interview in the magazine's Web site, she's "really upset" by speculation she endorses the "ex-gay" movement -- a collection of Christian groups that seek to alter sexual orientation. The speculation stemmed from comments she made on the "American Idol" Web site praising author and speaker Beth Moore, of Living Proof Ministries. Moore's Web site has links to groups such as Exodus International that discourage homosexuality.

"It broke my heart," Mandisa says. "I live my life by the value system that you treat others the way you want to be treated. I let love be my guide. I absolutely hate no one."

Long a favorite of "Idol" judges, she says her views "could have contributed" to her surprising elimination. "Idol" contestants are trimmed weekly based on fan voting.

"Honestly, I'm not sure," she says. "I've heard a lot of different theories about what could have happened, and all of 'em sound pretty decent to me."

Same-sex couples from states where gay marriage is banned cannot legally marry in Massachusetts, the state's highest court ruled Thursday.

The Supreme Judicial Court, which three years ago made Massachusetts the first state to legalize gay marriage, upheld a 1913 state law that forbids nonresidents from marrying in Massachusetts if their marriage would not be recognized in their home state.

"The laws of this commonwealth have not endowed non-residents with an unfettered right to marry," the court wrote in its 38-page opinion. "Only non-resident couples who come to Massachusetts to marry and intend to reside in this commonwealth thereafter can be issued a marriage license without consideration of any impediments to marriage that existed in their former home states."

Eight gay couples from surrounding states had challenged the law in a case watched closely across the country.

In its ruling, the court sent the cases involving couples from Rhode Island and New York back to a lower court, saying it was unclear whether same-sex marriage is prohibited in those states.

Gov. Mitt Romney applauded the ruling.

"We don't want Massachusetts to become the Las Vegas of same-sex marriage," Romney said. "It's important that other states have the right to make their own determination of marriage and not follow the wrong course that our Supreme Judicial Court put us on."

One plaintiff, Mark Pearsall, called Thursday's ruling "illogical."

"It's a statement that's not really based around any sense of humanity, but really on a sense of politics, which is really not a fair way to treat people. It's a hurtful thing," said Pearsall, of Lebanon, Conn., who traded vows with Paul Trubey in Worcester in 2004.

In oral arguments before the high court in October, a lawyer for the couples argued that the 1913 law had been unused for decades, until it was "dusted off" by Romney in an attempt to discriminate against same-sex couples.

Romney ordered city and town clerks to enforce that law after the first same-sex marriages were performed in Massachusetts in May 2004.

Attorneys for the state argued that Massachusetts risked a backlash if it ignored the laws of other states by letting same-sex couples marry here when their own states prohibited such unions.

More than 6,000 gay couples have tied the knot in Massachusetts since the court ruled in 2003 that the state Constitution gives same-sex couples the same right to marry as heterosexual couples.

For three years, Josh Weast of O'Fallon, Ill., had used the gym at Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese to coach about 40 girls and boys. He was not a school employee.

School principal Dennis Litteken, contacted by the PlanetOut Network, said he had "no comment."

Weast told AP that he regretted making the videos, but that he needed the money. He said his private life should have no effect on his ability to coach.

Rick Garcia, the director of public policy for Equality Illinois, said Weast's banning "had little to do with the type of porn it was."

"Our religious institutions have special rights and special privileges," Garcia said. "They pretty much have free rein to do whatever they want."

Two gay candidates vied in Tuesday's Democratic primary for a Dallas seat in the Texas House of Representatives, with Jack Borden defeating Tom Malin, who last month admitted to having worked as a male escort.

Borden, who triumphed with 55 percent of the vote, will challenge Republican Dan Branch in the November election.

Darlene Ewing, chairwoman of the Dallas County Democratic Party, said Malin's prostitution history made the difference "because Malin was certainly the more articulate of the candidates and knew the issues better."

Malin holds no grudges against the Dallas Morning News, which first revealed the prostitution details last month. The high-ranking Mary Kay cosmetics salesman received 45 percent of the vote, according to the newspaper, despite losing several key endorsements, including that of the Stonewall Democrats and the Dallas Morning News itself.

"They were just reporting the news that had been delivered to them," Malin said, adding that he knows who tipped off the paper -- a gay Dallas Democrat.

"They did me a huge favor," Malin said of the paper and the tipster. "Is our society willing to embrace people who have taken a road to redemption? That's my story."

Malin, who says he does not plan to re-enter politics, added, "I respect the choice that the voters made. I think Jack Borden is an example of what everything the Democratic Party stands for."

Jack Borden told the PlanetOut Network he believes Malin was in the campaign simply to run against him. "Nobody heard of him until he filed," Borden said.

"I've been active in the gay community ever since I came to Dallas," Borden said, adding that he was one of the founders of the Dallas Gay Alliance. "We've been raising hell ever since," he said.

Borden said he is looking forward to the November election. "I think Dan Branch can be beaten because he has screwed up the school financing for the past two years," he said.

If Borden wins, he will become the second openly gay man to serve in the Texas House. The first was Glen Maxey, who represented Austin and retired in 2002.

<< A Definition about what a Gay online person is about.
Basic Facts - The defining key words

TOTALLY TOP - (1) I have masculinity and control issues. (2) I'm ugly and
since most gay men are bottoms, I can hopefully get laid this way.
trained. (3) Like Totally Top, I also have control issues. (4) I have a small penis

BB (BAREBACK) - (1) I don't care about my own well being, let

AVERAGE BUILD - (1) Many people operate under the assumption that all gay men go to the gym, so, I'm hoping you'll be dumb enough to think I do too. The average American male is out of shape, overweight, and so am I.

MEDIUM BUILD - (1) Since people are catching on to the meaning of "average build," I've started saying I have a medium build. 2) See AVERAGE BUILD.

RUNNER'S BUILD - (1) I'm hoping the sports-metaphor will turn you on, but,
be advised, I'm skinny.

SWIMMER'S BUILD - (1) I'm slimmer than a football player, but beefier than a runner. I've never swam a day in my life but don't know what else to call myself. I'm hoping the sports-metaphor will turn you on.

BUTCH - (1) I'm a big queen and think wearing a baseball cap and/or leather makes me look like a man.

I SCORED X ON HALLOWEEN - (1) I care way too much what other people think. (2) I have issues with being gay.

PIG - (1) Sex is the most important thing to me. (2) My life sucks, and
sex helps deaden the pain.

PNP (party and play) - (1) I take drugs, most likely crystal meth and I'm probably addicted. (2) My life sucks and drugs help deaden the pain. (3) I'm weak and haven't asked for help yet, even though I desperately need it.

VGL (VERY GOOD LOOKING) - (1) I think my worth and your worth in the gay community is based solely on looks. (2) I'm insecure. (3) I desperately need to be validated.

S2R (SEND TO RECEIVE) - (1) I'm bitter, have been burned, and cling to it like a hungry baby to a bottle.

MASSAGE THERAPIST - (1) I take money for sex, but try to wrap it up in a nice sounding professional name.

ESCORT - (1) I'm a sex-addict, so I might as well make some money at it. (2) (occasionally) I'm really homely/average, and it makes me feel better about myself to think someone might pay me for sex, even though no one in their right mind ever would.

DISCREET - (1) I'm cheating on my significant other. (2) I'm a closet case and paranoid.

UNINHIBITED - See "BB"

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BLOW YOUR LOAD? - (1) I'm hoping you'll say, "down your throat" or "up your hole." (2) I'm looking for an excuse to reject you, so, no matter what your answer is, I can claim its incompatable with where I want it.

I DON'T HAVE A PIC - (1) see "discreet." (2) I DO have a pic, but nobody
wants to meet me once they see it, so, I'm better off saying I don't
have one. (3) I'm paraniod that someone will take my head and airbrush it
onto Oprah's body.

STRAIGHT-ACTING - (1) I eroticize straight men way beyond what is reasonable and have wet dreams about straight-guys all the time. (2) I think straight men have a monopoly on masculinity. (3) I have unresolved issues with being gay. (4) I never got over being in love with my best friend in High-School.

ARE YOU INTO BLACK GUYS? (1) I'm black, and like Patty Hearst, I've adopted the mentality of my oppressors. I'm going from the assumption that attraction is not based on ME as an idividual, but rather the color of my skin. The plus side of this arrangement is, if you reject me, I don't have to take it
personally, I can just write you off as a racist. (2) I'm into white guys.

I'M NOT INTO THE BAR SCENE or I'M OVER THE BAR SCENE - (1) I
currently have, or in the very recent past had, a huge emotional
investment in the bar scene, otherwise I wouldn't feel the need to
proclaim so loudly that I'M OVER IT. (2) I can describe to you in detail
the interior decoration of every club on the strip, and, am on a first
name basis with all the bartenders. (3) I refer to my male friends as
"her" and "she" behind their backs. (4) I haven't figured out yet what
I'm currently into so, instead of defining myself in a positive way,
I've decided to focus on the negative. (5) I'm no longer as pretty as I
once was, and don't get the validation that I need at the bars anymore,
so, I've decided to join a Gay Chorus.

VERY PICKY - (1) I have low self esteem so rather than risk getting hurt, I make everyone not good enough so I never have to face rejection or deal with the complexities of a real relationship. (2) I am looking for someone to support me so I no longer have to work retail. (3) I am looking for a trophy, not a lover. (4) I hate my father.

BOI or BOY - (1) I'm under 25. (2) I'm 35 and haven't updated my pic, profile or mentality since I was 25. (3) I'm 55 pretending I'm 25. I will also use words like "sup" and "kewl."

I'M NOT FAT - (1) I'm fat.

I'M A PHOTOGRAPHER - 1) I want to sleep with you but I'm too homely or shy to think of any other way I can see you naked besides pretending to be a photographer. >>

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A small-town police chief was accused in a federal lawsuit Thursday of stopping a would-be rescuer from performing CPR on a gay heart attack victim because he assumed the ailing man had HIV and posed a health risk.

Claude Green, 43, died June 21 after being stricken yards from City Hall in Welch, a community of about 2,400.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued on behalf of his mother.

Police Chief Bobby Bowman called the allegations "a boldface lie." He said that he called an ambulance and that Green was taken to the hospital in "no more than nine minutes."

"No one refused him CPR as his sister and mom are saying. They can do what they want, but if they're saying I refused him CPR, that is no way true," Bowman said.

The lawsuit accuses Bowman of pulling off Green's friend Billy Snead as Snead was performing chest compressions on the man. Snead was a passenger in Green's pickup truck when Green collapsed; Snead had managed to pull over the vehicle.

Snead said in an interview that he didn't realize at first it was Bowman giving the order and continued working on his friend. Bowman repeated his command to get away, saying that Green was HIV positive, then grabbed Snead by the shoulders and told him to sit on the curb, Snead said.

"He was a police officer so I got out the way. I assumed he would help. I didn't want to be a hindrance," Snead said. "He also told the ambulance drivers that he was HIV positive and to be careful."

Green was pronounced dead at the hospital after about 30 minutes of attempts to revive him.

Rose Saxe, a lawyer with the ACLU's AIDS Project, said Bowman's alleged actions contributed to Green's death and violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, equal protection laws and due process rights.

Saxe said Green's death was "tragically senseless" because he did not have the AIDS virus, but added that he should have received lifesaving care even if he was HIV-positive.

"He was simply a gay man in Welch, West Virginia. And because of that we can only assume that Chief Bowman assumed he had HIV and it was unsafe to even touch him," Saxe said.

When asked if he knew if Green was gay, Bowman would not answer and referred questions to McDowell County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Danny Barie, who also represents the City of Welch.

Barie said Thursday he had received a copy of the complaint but could not comment because he had not reviewed it or discussed it with Bowman.

last night on UPN, Okra added another notch to her belt by interviewing this boy. she totally left out the truth and put her spin on it because she selectively controlled what they talked about. INNOCENTLY forgetting that this boy was NO victim, as hard as she tried to make him look like one.

<< Last December, the New York Times ran a long story "Through His Webcam, a Boy Joins a Sordid World Online." It detailed how Justin Berry ran a gay-for-pay website starring himself for five years, from ages 13 to 18. Berry outlines how, after being offered $50 to take off his shirt shortly after going online with his first webcam, he learned to entice men to send more and more money, processed as online credit card transactions. Soon he was making, by his estimates, up to $900 an hour for masturbating for his online subscribers, and was successfully soliciting gifts of computer equipment to expand his business. Berry reports frequently treating his clients with contempt, delaying answers to queries just to torment his eager fans: "These people had no lives," he told the Times, "They would never get mad."

In June, 2005, reporter Kurt Eichenwald began communicating with Berry online (without identifying himself as a reporter). Eichenwald convinced Berry, 18 at the time, to meet him. After being shown "the inner workings" of the online porn world (and thus making himself a felon under current child-porn laws), Eichenwald-- now known to be a Times reporter-- urged Berry to hand his computer records over to prosecutors. Berry did, and now hundreds of men face decades in prison because they responded to the teen's well-crafted enticements.

Eichenwald's subsequent story follows a predictable formula wherein the obvious facts of the case are ignored and a morality tale is told instead. Berry is repeatedly termed a "victim," though he was receiving thousands of dollars from men he was consciously and skillfully manipulating. And Berry's online clients are repeatedly branded "predators," though by Berry's own admission they "would never get mad" and were only the pixels of a screen name.

Most telling, however, is the video interview with Berry, now 19, posted on the Times website. In describing his early entrepreneurial days, Berry is full of life, recounting with obvious enjoyment how he built up his business by teasing clients, offering to show more if they paid more. He seems proud of how he was using his undeniable sexual allure and new technology to make gobs of money. But after his cover was blown by the Times reporter/prosecutor, Berry's demeanor changes; he now knows what he did was terribly wrong and that his former clients-- whom he now calls "pedophiles"-- are dangerous and sick men. Of course, Berry does not mention that he, now an adult, is facing life in prison if he does not cooperate with the Times-inspired prosecution. A reasonable person might think that that threat colors his current interpretation of the story, but the Times does not even mention it as a possible bias.

The poor journalistic standards evinced by the Times in this story are many. Words like "victim" and "predator" are used nonsensically to obscure, rather than reveal the truth; instead of reporting the facts with clear language, the Times is out to uphold the dogma that teens are, invariably, utterly helpless and that adults sexually interested in teens are, invariably, utterly monstrous.

And it is a tenet of responsible journalism that reporters not create the stories they are supposedly "reporting" on. But Eichenwald wasn't simply getting the facts-- he managed and created the story by urging Berry to stop his activities and cooperate with prosecutors. Many men will likely go to prison for viewing the same imagery that Eichenwald claims the right to study as a reporter.

In these days of secret police and state-sponsored fear-mongering, a free and independent press is vital to protecting civil liberties. The Berry story makes clear how little the New York Times has to contribute to that fight. >>

An attack by a neo-Nazi teenager, accused of shooting two people and bludgeoning a third with a hatchet in a Massachusetts gay bar before fleeing, has stunned gays in the region and sparked fears that the assailant could strike again.

A manhunt was under way on Friday for an 18-year-old whom police say walked into Puzzles Lounge in the city of New Bedford late on Wednesday, ordered two drinks and then went on a rampage after asking a bartender "is this a gay bar?"

Jacob Robida faces about a dozen charges, including three counts of attempted murder and civil rights violations for the attack that left three men seriously wounded, police said.

"It's a vicious and ugly reminder of anti-gay prejudice," David Smith, head of policy and strategy at the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group, said. "What is unique about hate crimes is that they terrorize the whole community."

When told he was in a gay bar, Robida walked into a back area where several men played pool, reached into his coat and pulled out a hatchet, police said.

He lunged at several men, striking two in the face with the hatchet before several of the bar's 18 patrons attempted to restrain him. He then drew a gun and began firing in the pink-walled venue, according to police and witnesses.

About 150 people, including New Bedford's mayor and several of the city's politicians, held a candlelight vigil late on Thursday on the street outside of the bar about 58 miles (93 km) south of Boston, the state's capital.

"We think he could strike again. We don't know what he will do, especially if he gets desperate," Paul Walsh, Bristol Dist. Attorney, told Reuters. "He's armed and extremely dangerous. We also cannot rule out that he could be suicidal."

Police across the Northeast U.S. coast are on alert for Robida, who was last seen by his mother when he returned home early on Thursday bleeding from a head wound and then leaving his house in a green Pontiac car, Walsh said.

NEO-NAZI LITERATURE

A search of Robida's bedroom turned up neo-Nazi literature and posters slurring gays, Jews and African-Americans, Walsh said. He also appears on a Web site posing with Nazi flags.

"I've had friends jumped before, but it wasn't with weapons and nothing on this scale," said Jeffrey Robbins, 33, a gay resident of New Bedford. He said his friends were concerned for their safety and feared a copy-cat attack.

"We're all just going to be more observant, walking each other to our cars with keys in our hands if we have to defend ourselves," he said.

Rep. Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, called on Washington to pass a bill that would extend the federal law on hate crimes to cover offenses targeting people because of sexual orientation.

Massachusetts has hate crime laws that cover sexual orientation but 29 states do not.

"This tragic incident underlines the problem of anti-gay violence in this country," Frank, who is gay and whose district includes New Bedford, said in a statement. "I will continue to press for amendments to existing federal hate crimes laws to cover this sort of horrible crime."

The crime stunned residents in the blue-collar city.

"It's crazy that it happened in this day and age," said Craig Paiva, a 29-year-old New Bedford resident who lives two blocks from Robida's home. "You wonder how someone could hate a group of people so badly at the age of 18."

A serial rapist of gay men was sentenced in federal court Friday to the maximum 200 years in a Florida prison and is expected to face murder charges for killing two of his victims.

Steven Lorenzo, 46, was found guilty in November of slipping the "date-rape drug" GHB into the drinks of nine gay men, then raping and sexually torturing them at his home.

Seven of Lorenzo's victims testified that they met Lorenzo in Tampa gay bars and went home with him. According to their testimony, when they woke up they were naked, bound and in pain. Lorenzo's attorney argued that the sex acts were consensual.

Two of the nine victims named in the rape case were murdered, and prosecutors say they plan to try Lorenzo and an accomplice, Scott Schweickert of Chicago, in the killings. Lorenzo allegedly met Schweickert online and agreed to fulfill a fantasy of torturing and killing men.

In May, Schweickert told federal agents that he and Lorenzo dismembered the body of Jason Galehouse, 26, put the pieces in garbage bags and scattered them in trash bags throughout Tampa on Dec. 19, 2003. The next night, Lorenzo and Schweickert allegedly drugged, raped and killed Michael Wachholtz, 26, wrapping him in a bed sheet and leaving him in his Jeep.

Schweickert's voluntary confession led police to a cache of nearly half a million images on Lorenzo's computer, including photographs of Wachholtz's dead body taken at Lorenzo's house. Galehouse's DNA was found in a pool of blood under the floor of Lorenzo's garage.

Schweickert faces a federal trial on similar drug charges within two weeks. State and local authorities believe it is likely that both men will face murder charges in state court as well.

Brian Winfield, spokesman for Equality Florida, said he was pleased with the results of the federal trial, but wants to ensure that murder charges go forward.

Winfield told the PlanetOut Network that police homophobia, contrary to earlier fears, has so far not hindered the investigation or the prosecution.

"We used town-hall meetings and press releases and other means to help victims who might be intimidated (by possibly homophobic officers) to come forward," he said. "Now the gay community's relationship with Tampa police has grown stronger, and we have a mostly open communication with the state attorney."

Investigators are also looking into the connection between Lorenzo and the disappearance of at least six other gay men in Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.

"Everyone involved in the case believes there are other victims of Lorenzo," Winfield said. "These nine were just the strongest cases."

Oaten, who joined the Liberal Democratic Party's leadership contest this month before pulling out last week, is alleged to have paid the 23-year-old man for sex on three occasions. Oaten is married with two children.

The News of the World ran its claims Sunday, although the news broke earlier in the weekend.

After the tabloid approached Oaten for a comment on the story, the front-bencher announced his resignation in a written statement.

"I would like to apologize for errors of judgment in personal behavior and for the embarrassment caused, firstly to my family but also to my friends, my constituents and my party," Oaten said in the statement.

The newspaper has been criticized by some people who have accused it of being homophobic in its reporting of the story.

Supporters of Oaten have echoed his own calls for privacy and said the party would pull together despite the negative publicity.

The news comes as the party continues to be the focus of attention.

Earlier this month, party leader Charles Kennedy was forced to step down from his position after he admitted having a drinking problem.

Sir Menzies Campbell, Simon Hughes and Chris Huhne will all stand in the vote for the party's new leader, which takes place from Feb. 6 to March 1.

Reece Sargeant, 21, Darren Case, 18, and David Blenman, 17, were all given sentences of 12 years for the spate of attacks that took place in London in 2004.

Chelsea O'Mahoney, 16, was given a sentence of eight years. The teenage girl had been the focus of attention throughout the case after it emerged that she kicked Morley's head "like a football."

The defendants were acquitted last month of murder and found guilty of manslaughter and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

As well as killing Morley, a popular barman who survived the Admiral Duncan nail bombing, a notorious 1999 hate crime in London's Soho district, they seriously injured eight other people during the attack that took place in the city's South Bank area.

Some of the beatings were reportedly filmed on their mobile phones, police said; prosecutors accused the defendants of killing "for what can only have been pleasure."

"Weapons were not carried and were hardly necessary when you had such an advantage in numbers," prosecutor Richard Horwell said. "The violence took the form of beatings, kicks and stamping."

Morley's death sparked widespread grief and condemnation from the capital's gay communities, who called for more protection in the wake of the attack. Additionally, some have questioned why the assailants were not found guilty of murder.

One of the Metropolitan Police force's most senior officers has admitted he is "deeply disappointed" with the manslaughter conviction received by Morley's killers.

Activist Peter Tatchell and victim support groups also called for harsher verdicts in future.

"David's killing resulted from a premeditated attack, where the assailants used pre-arranged code words to launch their assault," Tatchell said last month. "They must have known that their extreme violence was likely to cause serious and potentially fatal injuries."

Laurel Hester has only a few weeks to live and pleaded her case via video on Wednesday, but that still didn't persuade officials to approve a resolution allowing county employees to pass on their pension benefits to domestic partners, The New York Times reported.

During the monthly meeting of county officials, the wood-paneled room was filled with Hester's supporters, including clergymen, veterans, and police officers, the newspaper reported. Steven Goldstein, chairman of New Jersey gay rights group Garden State Equality, played the videotape of Hester.

The room was silent as the 49-year-old told officials, "I've been diagnosed with several brain tumors, hence the loss of hair," she said. "In addition, it has spread elsewhere."

Hester, according to the Times, told the room that she wants her domestic partner, Stacie Andree, 30, to be able to collect her pension benefits so that Andree can afford to keep the house the couple bought a few years ago. "All I'm asking for is that you sign the resolution and that you make a change," Hester said in the video, wheezing, "a change for good, a change for righteousness, and a change in the lives of so many people that have dedicated themselves to county government."

The officials tried to defend their reasons for not extending the benefits. These included high costs or the fact that the law was "unfair" because it did not provide for siblings or other relatives who were not married to each other to share benefits. They were shouted down by the crowd, who chanted, "You have the power, you have the power," according to the newspaper.

George Farrugia, president of the Gay Officers Action League, told officials, "Six other counties have shown that you have the power to act. Your inaction is reprehensible."

AUSTIN, Tex. - A year ago, Stephen Wright and his partner, John Wright, embarked on a sociology experiment that only a reality show producer could concoct: theirs was one of seven families competing to persuade the residents of a cul-de-sac here to award them a red-brick McMansion purchased on their behalf by the ABC television network.

The unscripted series, "Welcome to the Neighborhood," was heavily promoted and scheduled to appear in a summer time slot usually occupied by "Desperate Housewives." Stephen Wright, 51, who was already living in a nice house a few miles away with his partner and adopted son, said he participated primarily for one reason: to show tens of millions of prime-time viewers that a real gay family might, over the course of six episodes, charm a neighborhood whose residents overwhelmingly identified themselves as white, Christian and Republican.

As it turned out, the Wrights did win - beating families cast, at least partly, for being African-American, Hispanic, Korean, tattooed or even Wiccan - but outside of a few hundred neighbors (who attended private screenings last summer) and a handful of journalists, almost no one has been able to see them do so.

Ten days before the first episode was to be shown, ABC executives canceled "Welcome to the Neighborhood," saying that they were concerned that viewers who might have been appalled at some early statements made in the show - including homophobic barbs - might not hang in for the sixth episode, when several of those same neighbors pronounced themselves newly open-minded about gays and other groups.

ABC acted amid protests by the National Fair Housing Alliance, which had expressed concern about a competition in which race, religion and sexual orientation were discussed as factors in the awarding of a house. But two producers of the show, speaking publicly about the cancellation for the first time, say the network was confident it had the legal standing to give away a house as a game-show prize. One, Bill Kennedy, a co-executive producer who helped develop the series with his son, Eric, suggested an alternative explanation. He said that the protests might have been most significant as a diversion that allowed the Walt Disney Company, ABC's owner, to pre-empt a show that could have interfered with a much bigger enterprise: the courting of evangelical Christian audiences for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Disney hoped that the film, widely viewed as a parable of the Resurrection, would be the first in a profitable movie franchise.

In the months and weeks before "Welcome to the Neighborhood" was to have its premiere, as Disney sought to build church support for "Narnia," four religious groups lifted longtime boycotts of the company that had been largely prompted by Disney's tolerance of periodic gatherings by gay tourists at its theme parks. Representatives for two of those groups now say that broadcasting "Neighborhood" could have complicated their support for "Narnia." One, the Southern Baptist Convention, with more than 16 million members, lifted the last of the boycotts against Disney on June 22, a week before ABC announced it was pulling the series.

When asked to respond to Mr. Kennedy's contention about "Narnia," Kevin Brockman, an ABC spokesman, said, "That's so ludicrous, it doesn't even merit a response." But Mr. Kennedy said he found ABC's stated reasons for canceling the series unconvincing. Although he acknowledged that he had "no smoking gun" to prove the link between "Narnia" and the fate of "Welcome to the Neighborhood," "I don't believe in coincidences," he said.

"Narnia," a joint venture with Walden Media, has gone on to earn almost $600 million since its release last month, on an investment of more than $150 million. "Neighborhood," by contrast, cost an estimated $10 million.

Now, nearly a year after production on "Neighborhood" concluded - and four months after the Wrights moved into the house - the couple, their new neighbors, Mr. Kennedy and another of the show's producers say they remain bewildered by the abrupt turn in the show's fortunes, including the statement by the network, which owns the rights to the series, that it has no plans either to broadcast it or allow it to be sold to another outlet.

The producers say that it is worth noting that a show that exists mainly to dispel people's tendencies to prejudge strangers was itself a victim of prejudgments. They also note that in a universe of failed reality-show relationships, this experiment has actually succeeded, yet only out of public view.

Since September, when the Wrights moved into their four-bedroom home in the Circle C Ranch development in southwest Austin, they have had standing Friday-night dinners with one neighborhood family (the Stewarts) and Sunday-night dinners with another (the Bellamys), whose twin teenage daughters are now their son's regular baby sitters.

Meanwhile, the neighbor who was the Wrights' earliest on-camera antagonist - Jim Stewart, 53, who is heard in an early episode saying, "I would not tolerate a homosexual couple moving into this neighborhood" - has confided to the producers that the series changed him far more than even they were aware.

No one involved in the show, Mr. Stewart said, knew he had a 25-year-old gay son. Only after participating in the series, Mr. Stewart said, was he able to broach his son's sexuality with him for the first time.

"I'd say to ABC, 'Start showing this right now,' " Mr. Stewart said in an interview at his oak kitchen table. "It has a message that needs to be heard by everyone." (Mr. Stewart first discussed his son publicly with The Austin American-Statesman.)

While other ABC shows have gay characters - including the new comedy "Crumbs" - "Neighborhood" features a real gay couple and their prospective neighbors in a continuing dialogue about homosexuality, including interpretations of the Bible.

In a recent interview, Richard Land, an official with the Southern Baptist Convention involved in the negotiations with Disney last year to end the group's boycott of the company, said he did not recall any mention of "Neighborhood." He added, however, that had the show been broadcast - particularly with an ending that showed Christians literally embracing their gay neighbors - it could have scuttled the Southern Baptists' support for "Narnia."

"I would have considered it a retrograde step," Mr. Land said of the network's plans to broadcast the reality series. "Aside from any moral considerations, it would have been a pretty stupid marketing move."

Paul McCusker, a vice president of Focus on the Family, which had supported the Southern Baptist boycott and reaches millions of evangelical listeners through the daily radio broadcasts of Dr. James Dobson, expressed similar views.

"It would have been a huge misstep for Disney to aggressively do things that would disenfranchise the very people they wanted to go see 'Narnia,' " he said.

Asked whether Disney's plans for "Narnia" had affected "Neighborhood," Mr. Brockman of ABC referred a reporter to comments made on July 26 by Stephen McPherson, the president of ABC Entertainment, to a gathering of television critics. At that time it was not widely known that a gay couple had won the competition. Instead, Mr. McPherson, a champion of the show until its sudden cancellation, was asked if he had been influenced by criticism by civil rights groups.

"If I stopped airing things just because advocacy groups had issues with it, we would run a test pattern," Mr. McPherson said. Rather, he said, he had begun to worry that some of the neighbors' most intolerant statements early on could confuse the audience's understanding of "the message you were trying to get across."

Hank Cohen, a former president of MGM Television Entertainment, a partner with ABC in "Neighborhood," said no one at the network had given him a direct answer as to what had transpired behind the scenes, and "the lack of any single coherent reason cited by them opens them up to all kinds of conjecture."

The full series, a copy of which was given to The New York Times by an advocate, is often raw, as contestants and judges speak openly about their preconceptions, only to observe in amazement as some of their ideas - though by no means all - melt away. Much of the give-and-take occurs in the series's version of the tribal council on "Survivor," as the three couples charged with giving away the house (bought by ABC for more than $300,000) meet to eliminate one family each episode.

Still, the neighbors' attitudes toward homosexuality constitute the dominant theme. That the tide may be shifting is telegraphed in an all-male scene in a hot tub, of all places, when one neighbor, John Bellamy, observes that Mr. Stewart appears to be softening his views toward gays. "I love you for that," Mr. Bellamy says, before cautioning, "Not in a weird kind of hot-tub love, with no chicks in the hot tub."

For Stephen Wright, who was recruited for the series through his church, which has a predominantly gay membership, the outcome has been bittersweet.

On the one hand, he has yet to achieve his goal of telling his family's story before a big audience. "We opened our souls and the life of our family, and we did it because we thought we could make a difference," he said.

But Mr. Wright said he took solace that through their participation in the series, he and his partner had had a positive impact on at least one relationship, that of Mr. Stewart and his son.

"We said at the outset that if we changed one person's heart or mind, it would be worth it," he said. "We have empirical evidence we did that."

"And," he added, "we won a house."

A fight that polarized the LGBT community in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood is over, as both sides announced a mediation agreement on Tuesday.

The center of the conflict was SF Badlands, a bar that had been accused of discriminating against African Americans.

A local group, And Castro for All (AC4A), started boycotting the bar in May 2005 after San Francisco's Human Rights Commission claimed the bar's owner, Les Natali, had referred to African Americans as "non-Badlands customers" and required African Americans to show multiple forms of identification.

In June 2005, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution urging city and state agencies to take action against Natali.

But after a yearlong undercover investigation, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) stated in July 2005 that it found no signs of discrimination at Badlands.

The two sides announced their fight had ended at a city entertainment commission Tuesday, when the commission was to decide whether Natali could obtain a new permit for the Pendulum bar, which serves mainly African Americans. The bar, across the street from Badlands, was closed for remodeling in June.

"Basically, after five months of mediation, we were able to come to an agreement that both parties found satisfactory," said Don Romesburg, an organizer with AC4A.

While a confidentiality agreement prevented Romesburg from divulging the details of the mediation, facilitated by former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, he promised changes would occur. "There will be changes made. I don't want to jeopardize this hard-won victory by saying any more."

"Some victories have already come," Romesburg added. "The staff is more diverse than when we started. The door staff is much more attuned to issues of discrimination."

"I believe all issues are resolved, and we are ready to move forward," Natali told the commissioners in a quote published by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The commissioners unanimously approved the permit.

John Weber, an African-American man who was one of the original complainants, told the San Francisco Chronicle, "Hopefully, this agreement will heal some wounds, and we won't have the discrimination we've had in the past."

Romesburg said AC4A would continue its work. "We're planning on improving economic opportunities for people of color and women in the LGBT community in San Francisco by working closely with business owners to bring diversity to their staff and working toward creating a Castro that's culturally relevant and exciting for all queer people."
